Lighthouse Homeschoolers started in August of 1991 with about 10 member families. Over the years the group structure and leadership has changed to accommodate its growth.

In 2002 a board of directors was formed and Lighthouse became incorporated and recognized by the IRS as a tax-exempt organization. An extension of Lighthouse, called Lighthouse Plus, was also formed to help meet the specific needs of students aged 10 and older.

Lighthouse currently has a membership of about 140 families representing more than 300 children. The board consists of seven members who oversee the business and activities of the group.

Lighthouse is a Christian-based organization and all board members are required to sign a statement of faith. Since it is not a Christian-exclusive group the general membership is not required to do so.

Though there have been many changes since its inception Lighthouse has always arranged weekly field trips and once a month “Teachers Meetings” at a local park. A number of other member benefits are now available, but field trips remain a major focus of the group.
